Pata and Alex at Coffee Roaster |
DW: It was our day off the bike; at least in the sense we
were not heading west for a forty to fifty miler, our typical daily pedaling
fare. Instead, we followed Alex on his single speed to a coffee business
(Rising Sun Coffee Roasters) on the verge of its grand opening. The three of us
wheeled our bicycles inside what used to be a firehouse complete with fireman’s
pole descending from the ceiling. The large room was being transformed into a
coffee business by employees who, it seemed, were all cyclists evident by the
half dozen or so bikes parked inside.
Willy Wonka was off the day of our visit, but at the back of
the room were two gleaming silver coffee bean roasters connected to computers
to regulate the roasting time and temperature of the beans. We were told the
machines cost about sixty thousand dollars each. This equipment investment was
aimed at the customer who appreciated a high grade coffee and didn’t mind
paying for it. The manager spoke at length about how coffee is graded, how the
coffee bags from each country are uniquely marked and current market prices.

Quite Impressive! |

Yes, there were two of them. |

Great coffee! |

This roaster had cool hand-painted graphics on it. |
Pata was given a sample cup of high test, and though I do not
drink coffee myself, I do love the smell of freshly brewed java. She was also
given a small bag of special blend ground beans that went right into her
panniers to be savored later.
Alex left to go to open his bike shop and we hung out for
another ten minutes before saying goodbye to our generous (and new) friends.
PAS: The coffee was some of the best I have ever had! I have enjoyed the coffee they gave us at primitive
campsites we have stayed at. What a
luxury!
