A cyclist's front porch. |
So, I e-mailed Ken from Warm Showers who lives in Defiance,
OH. (Actually he lives at the border of Defiance and Ayersville.) He gave me his address and said that he
leaves the house open and to make ourselves at home. Again, we were impressed with the trust of
strangers.
We got to his house in the heat of the day and were welcomed
with a bicycle on the porch, cycling gear lining the stairs, and a new Trek
Madonne on display in the living room.
Needless to say, we felt right at home.
We took showers and did some laundry while we waited for Ken
to get off work as a rural letter carrier.
Pata and Ken |
DW Ken arrived late afternoon and welcomed us warmly. Later
he drove Pata to the store where she brought ingredients for our dinner and
prepared it in Ken’s spacious kitchen. What a wonderful host Ken was! We had a
nice place to sleep, our own bathroom and plenty of good conversation. I always
love talking bikes with another cyclist and Ken was no exception.
Check out the cool Madonne! |
The Trek
Madonne in his living room looked like a piece of art; and the handsome Trek
road bike in his dining room had rolled 30,000 miles – that’s a serious rider,
folks. He also had a brand new Cannondale 29-er mountain bike with massive
wheels and tires, quite nice! The next morning Ken came out at 6:45AM and we
said our goodbyes in his garage and off we rolled into the cool overcast (nice)
morning. I caught a strong vibe that Ken wanted to roll out with us as he had
done with other departing cycling guests; it is hard to end a friendship that
has just begun.
